Some thoughts on GP…

1. GP is really not about GP per se. No one goes around proclaiming to be a good General Paperist. Mastery in this subject is really about possessing the necessary thinking, reading and writing skills to help one in whatever discipline or interest one is pursuing e.g. the engineer can better communicate his/her ideas, the journalist is more aware of the world he/she is reporting on.

2. GP is also not about amassing knowledge for mere regurgitation. Your pen is not the inked usb cable for your mental hardisk. Your pen is supposed to be a sword–one that needs sharpening and practice with, and that’s why we need the skills contained in (1).

3. GP is also about humility. The more critically aware you are, the bigger your capacity for empathy, for understanding, for appreciation. At the end of the day, you don’t just develop the inquisitive mind, you also build up the mature person.
